Robert E. Lee was connected to the Civil War because he was the general of the Confederate Army.  Lee was thought to be one of the best generals ever.  His tactics and battle plans were superior.  He was very well respected by both the North and the South.  Lee was Lincoln's first choice as general of the Union Army, but  he declined because he was loyal to Virginia.  This is why he chose the Confederacy.  He did not agree with slavery or splitting up the country, but he was loyal to Virginia.  So Lee fought for these things even though he did not agree with them.  "I cannot trust a man to control others who cannot control himself."- quoted from Robert E Lee.
