Civil War

First Battle of Bull Run

The First Battle of Bull Run took place in Manassas, Virginia.  It was the first real battle of the Civil War.  Everyone thought it was going to last a few hours and the Union would be victorious.  The Union wanted to attack Richmand, Virginia, the Confederate capital.  They met Confederate troops in Manassas and had them on the run, but when Confederate reinforcements arrived, they pushed back the Union army.  The Union army retreated back to the north and the Confederate troops did not chase them.  The Confederates felt victorious and the Union wanted revenge.  This battle proved that it wasn't going to be a one-sided war.
