    Lincoln contributed to the Civil War because he was the president during the time it began.  He opposed three things- 1.slavery 2.state's rights 3.war.  The only reason he went to war was because he thought it was the only way to preserve the Union.  Lincoln read the Gettysburg Address after the Battle of Gettysburg and talked about being one country again.  He wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, abolishing slavery.  Lincoln was also elected President two terms in a row.  "A house divided against itself cannot stand."- quoted from Abraham Lincoln.
